We never know what a week REALLY holds do we.......
those who live in the Washington DC metro area know
this was a week of surprises!
A bit after lunch on Tuesday ~
we experienced an earthquake: 5.9, one of the biggest
earthquakes to hit our area.
It was QUITE the experience
and so interesting to ask people "where were YOU when the earthquake hit".
I LOVED hearing everybody's stories of that day.
Everyone heard different things depending on where they were ~
in a building or outside.
Alden was at work ~ in Rosslyn on the 10th floor of his building.
He said he was sitting at his desk with his back to the windows.
He heard what sounded like hail hitting the windows.
He remembers thinking "I don't remember that we were supposed to have a storm today."
He turned to see the storm and saw the sun shining.
Hmmmm.
Walked over to the window and saw people running out the buildings....
and of course by then felt the shaking of the floor and building.
He wondered what he should do.
He gathered his "stuff" and headed downstairs (once the earthquake stopped)
and got in his car and headed home.
Good thing, as the traffic was TERRIBLE awhile later, as everyone was let go to head home early that day....all at once!!!!!
I was at work ~ and those who know IBC know the glass breezeway and the school
reception area. I was standing outside in the hallway working at a table.
I heard the noise first and wondered what "that truck" was doing SO close to our building.
It got louder and louder and I thought "it is going to come through the wall"!
I turned to ask someone what that noise was and looked down through the breezeway and the hallway towards to Narthex.
The breezeway bridge was bouncing up and down and the hallway as well. AND....
it was blurry (thus the "severity of the {shake})
I grabbed Mary Sue's arm and said "let's get OUT of here".
We ran outside....to FIRST see Jack Bay, our construction supervisor.
Some other people had come outside and asked "are you guys doing something?"
and Jack said "NO, this is an earthquake"!
Alden came by the church on his way home to check on me.
Our cell phones were not working.
Once we got home, every room had items that were toppled over.,
but we were safe and we were thankful.
About the same time Hurricane Irene was forming in the Caribbean
and we began to hear the news of that storm coming our way.
Sure enough ~ she came right by!
We really weren't terribly affected by this ~
except with lots of heavy rain and wind.
We simply had a leaky sunroom (thus the pan to catch the water)
and tree branches down and a gutter that fell off the house.
We are thankful for God's hand of protection
through these situations.
Who knew living here in the DC area could be SO exciting!
